Asian Boxing Championships 2022 Live Stream: India’s Hopes On Lovlina Borgohain, Shiva Thapa

3 min read

At the Asian Boxing Championships 2022, which will take place from November 1 to November 12 in Amman, Jordan, top names such as Mary Kom, Nikhat Zareen, and Amit Panghal will not be competing.

As a result, the responsibility of leading an otherwise inexperienced Indian contingent will fall on Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and experienced Shiva Thapa.

After a tough season, world champion Nikhat Zareen and fellow Commonwealth Games gold medalist Amit Panghal have decided to take a sabbatical from competing. Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games winner Nitu Ghanghas is now recovering from a shoulder ailment. Mary Kom, a six-time world champion, required knee surgery not too long ago and is currently recuperating from the procedure.

The 2018 Asian boxing championships will take place in Amman, Jordan, and India will be sending a total of 25 athletes, including 13 men and 12 women, to compete in the event. The boxers were selected through a process of nationwide competitions that took place in May. Live streaming is available for the matches, so fans may watch them online.

Former juvenile boxing world champion Sachin Siwach, who was due to compete for India in the men’s 54 kilogram weight class, had to withdraw from the competition because he needed appendix surgery. Ananta Chopade will take over in his stead after being selected for the role.

Shiva Thapa, who won five medals at the Asian Boxing Championships and won a bronze medal at the World Championships, will be fighting in the 63.5 kilogram weight class. Thapa is India’s most successful male boxer in the history of the Asian Boxing Championships.

Lovlina Borgohain is moving up to the 75-kilogram weight division at the upcoming competition in Amman. Prior to this, she competed in the 69/70-kilogram weight class, in which she won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The upcoming competition will be especially significant for Lovlina Borgohain.

The welterweight competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics will not include the 69-kilogram weight class, therefore the Assam boxer will have to compete in a different weight class.

Overall, Lovlina Borgohain had a terrible 2022 season, since she did not win a medal in either the Commonwealth Games or the boxing world championships that were contested this year. At the most recent iteration of the Asian championships, Lovlina brought home the bronze.

India took home a total of 15 medals from the most recent iteration of the continental competition, including two gold, five silver, and eight bronze. Pooja Rani (women’s 75kg) and Sanjeet Kumar (men’s 91kg) won the gold medals.

In addition, the beginning of the Bernard Dunne era in Indian boxing will be commemorated at the Asian meet. After the departure of the Swedish national Santiago Nieva, the illustrious Irishman was recently selected to take over the role of High Performance Director for the squad.
