Katie Taylor Defeats Karen Elizabeth Carabajal To Defend Lightweight Title

5 min read

Katie Taylor of Ireland was able to successfully defend her IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO world lightweight belts with a decisive victory over Karen Elizabeth Carabajal on the basis of points.

Katie Taylor, who is 36 years old, was competing for the first time since she defeated Amanda Serrano of Puerto Rico via a split decision in April. That fight was the first women’s fight to serve as the main event in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

However, this was a more typical defense for her against her courageous opponent from Argentina.

Katie Taylor emerged victorious after a back-and-forth battle that lasted the distance, with scores of 100-91, 99-91, and 98-92.

“She had everything to gain, I think I boxed smartly, I was a bit open at times but just happy to get the victory,” said Katie Taylor, who hoped that her next fight would be in Dublin, which would be her first professional bout in her home country. “I think I boxed smartly,” she said. “I was a bit open at times but just happy to get the victory.”

We have the ability to put on a night of boxing that Ireland will never forget.
In addition to her Olympic gold medal from 2012, Katie Taylor is currently undefeated in all 22 of her professional fights. Fourteen of those fights have taken place in England, one has taken place in Wales, and seven have taken place in the United States; however, she has not yet fought in Ireland during her groundbreaking career.

“Amanda Serrano, do you want to fight in front of 80,000 people at Croke Park? According to Katie Taylor, “it would be the most important event in the history of women’s boxing.”

“It’s a pretty easy fight to make, and I’m happy to wait a few months for the biggest fight of my career – it would be a dream for me,” said the boxer. “It’s a fight that can be made very easily.”

Eddie Hearn, the promoter, then said, “It is time to return to Ireland now,” which was met with roaring applause from the audience.

“Irish must be the next target, no matter who or where the culprit is. It is time to offer Ireland a sporting event that they will never forget; the Irish supporters are wonderful, and they have traveled all over the world to see their teams play.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is Amanda Serrano, but regardless of who it is, it must be Ireland. There is no one more deserving of the spotlight than Katie Taylor, and we can make this a night of boxing that Ireland will never forget.

“When we came here six years ago, people were making fun of us and laughing. Katie Taylor has been blazing trails in the wilderness for other people to follow. She is an icon in the history of this sport.

The events leading up to the battle with Carabajal

Carabajal, a former national and South American champion, was fighting for the first time outside of Argentina. The 32-year-old came to London with a record of 19 wins from 19 bouts, although only two of those victories had been completed inside of the distance. Carabajal fought in London with a record of 19 wins from 19 bouts.

Katie Taylor, who was being cheered on by a rowdy and enthusiastic crowd in London, swiftly stamped her influence on the bout. She talked up her prospects of creating a shock win and taking the belts back to Argentina with her.

Bookmakers gave Katie Taylor odds of 1-25 before the fight began, and she immediately demonstrated her class, speed, and power by taking the center of the ring. Carabajal was caught by Taylor’s jabs and struggled to land anything meaningful in the first of the ten rounds that lasted two minutes each. The fight consisted of ten rounds totaling twenty minutes each.

The Argentine boxer got off to an aggressive start at the beginning of the second round, but as the round progressed, she found that she was getting picked off by overhand lefts and rights. This was a pattern that continued into the third round, with Taylor’s superior movement making it difficult for her opponent to hit her.

During the fourth round, Katie Taylor had Carabajal cornered in the corner. The two fighters were feverishly dealing blows with one another, and the Argentine did a fantastic job of escaping what appeared to be a terrible moment.

Carabajal was gutsy, offensive, and totally engaged despite receiving a cut behind her right eye in the fifth round. However, she was beginning to take some punishment as Taylor pressed for what would have been her first victory inside the distance in nine fights.

Taylor struck a superb overhand left in the seventh round, but because she was aware that she had banked the previous rounds, she was content to wait and avoid taking any excessive chances.

Carabajal, who had been cut again around her right eye, had shown incredible grit to stay in the competition for the final round and pushed for a major upset, but Taylor managed to keep out of harm’s way before the judges determined that she had won.

Taylor has had quite the journey since making her professional debut in November of 2016, when she defeated Karina Szmalenberg of Poland in the third round at Wembley Arena. She was now back at the scene of that fight, which took place at the same arena.

She is a two-weight world champion, having gone up a weight class and earned a WBO belt at light-welterweight in 2019 before moving back down to lightweight competition. This was her 16th consecutive fight for a world title, and she is a world champion in both weight classes.

And now, with the possibility of a fight taking place at Croke Park in the summer of 2019, another monumental evening for Katie Taylor – and for women’s boxing – is just around the doorstep.
